Nowadays, the optical version is the standard type sold.
Optical mice were expensive to make, however, and it wasn't until the late 90s that prices had dropped enough for them to come into general use. The advantage of an optical device was that it solved a major issue with the ball mouse, where the ball would pick up dirt, grease, and fluff and gradually lose functionality over time (although they could be cleaned, of course - never a particularly pleasant task!). I've also heard the gpro superlight is the better version but I'm looking for something more on the gpro side of weight since I don't want a mouse like the superlight which will probably keep lifting up. The only issue I have with the gpro wireless is the constant worry about the double clicking which can happen from 1month to 1 year of using it from what I've heard. I have the glorious model O wired which I'd say is on par with my gpro wireless in terms of how good it is however it starts to feel sticky/uncomfortable which is its only downside.
